The picture
Imagine your savings not as one big pitcher you nervously pour from, but as three buckets on a shelf. The first holds about five years of the income you'll need, kept deliberately steady. The second holds roughly the following ten years, invested with moderate balance. The third is fifteen-plus-year money, still invested like the future it is.
When markets drop, the far bucket swings. And that's fine, it has years to recover. The near bucket barely moves, so your grocery money never depends on a headline.
Why it works on humans, not just spreadsheets
The math matters: avoiding selling growth investments during a downturn protects the whole plan. But the bigger effect is behavioral: people with a steady near-term bucket stop panic-checking their accounts, stop panic-selling, and start actually spending with permission. The strategy buys stability and sleep at the same time.
Buckets need maintenance: refilling the near bucket in good years, adjusting for life changes. That upkeep is a lot of what our ongoing management, Signature Retirement Continuum, actually is.
