Coaching the identity, connection, and purpose side of the retirement transition.
One of my closest friends retired. Like so many people who spend decades working toward that milestone, we counted down the days together. As her retirement date got closer, we planned her retirement party, talked about everything she was looking forward to, and celebrated the beginning of what we both believed would be one of the best seasons of her life.
I cheered her on every step of the way. And if I’m honest, there was a part of me that was a little jealous. I couldn’t wait until it was my turn.
Then, during an ordinary conversation, she said something I’ll never forget.
“I’m afraid you’re going to find me boring.”
I had never thought about retirement that way.
Not because she was boring. She wasn’t. She was still the funny and vibrant friend that I loved being around.
It was because I had never considered that retirement could make someone question how they saw themselves.
I won’t share the details of our conversations because they belong to her. But I will tell you this. That conversation changed me.
As I reflected on what she had shared, I found myself thinking back to another major transition in my own life.
Years earlier, I had become a stay-at-home mom, a dream I had looked forward to for years. I loved being home with my children, and I wouldn’t trade those years for anything.
But I also remember discovering something I hadn’t expected. Changing my circumstances didn’t automatically change who I was. I still needed connection with others. I still wanted opportunities to grow, contribute, and make a difference in society. I still needed to be professionally challenged.
That’s when everything clicked. Retirement isn’t just a financial transition. It’s a life transition.
We spend decades preparing our savings, investments, and retirement accounts. Yet very few of us prepare for what happens when the structure, identity, and rhythms of work are gone. That realization sent me on a journey.
The more I learned, the more convinced I became that financial planning is only part of the picture. The happiest retirees don’t just have a retirement income plan. They have a life plan.
That’s why my husband, RC, and I created The Retirement Life.
We believe financial planning is incredibly important. In fact, it’s one of the greatest gifts you can give your future. But money is only one part of the equation. The real goal isn’t simply to retire. It’s to wake up excited about the life you’ve created.
Because after spending decades building your career…
You deserve to spend the years ahead building a life you love.
