More than 30 years as a pastor
Purpose, connection, and the stories we believe about aging (and co-host of The Retirement Life podcast).
For more than thirty years, I’ve had the privilege of walking with people through some of life’s biggest moments. I’ve celebrated weddings, dedicated babies, sat beside hospital beds, comforted grieving families, and watched people navigate seasons they never expected.
As a pastor, I’ve learned that whatever season of life we are in, whether we are facing a difficulty or going through life transitions, we all need other people walking with us and helping us along the way.
A few years ago, RC and Deana invited me to be part of a focus group for something they were creating called The Retirement Life.
To be honest, I thought I was there to help them. I had no idea those conversations would end up changing me.
For much of my adult life, I carried fears about getting older. Those fears often centered around my health. Even though I knew I was healthy, my mind had convinced me that aging meant decline, loss, and something to fear.
Then, during one of those focus group conversations, we started talking about the stories we believe about aging.
It was like someone turned on a light.
I realized that many of the fears I had been carrying weren’t based on reality at all. They were based on assumptions I’d accepted for years without ever questioning them.
For the first time in a long time, I found myself looking toward the future with hope instead of fear.
That experience changed me.
It also reminded me of something I’d been witnessing throughout my years in ministry.
People are searching for hope. They are longing for it.
As I thought about retirement through that lens, I realized why so many people struggle with the transition.
For decades, work gives us more than a paycheck. It gives us routines. Relationships. A place to contribute. A reason people depend on us.
When that season ends, many people don’t lose their purpose. They lose the environment that made their purpose easy to see.
That’s why I became so passionate about The Retirement Life.
I believe retirement can become one of the most meaningful seasons of life, but it doesn’t happen by accident.
We were created for connection.
We were created to contribute.
We were created to keep growing.
My hope is that every person discovers that retirement isn’t the end of their story. It’s the beginning of a new chapter. One filled with meaningful relationships, renewed purpose, and the freedom to invest your time in what matters most.
Because the greatest years of your life don’t have to be behind you. Your retirement years can be some of the most meaningful (and fulfilling) years yet.
